What the Happiest and Most Successful Women Do Differently: Q&A with Marcus Buckingham
Sunday January 31st 2010, 12:12 pm

Sandra  Bienkowski  January 19, 2010

Marcus Buckingham is a leadership expert, internationally renowned speaker and New York Times best-selling author of several books, including First, Break All the Rules; Now Discover Your Strengths and Find Your Strongest Life: What the Happiest and Most Successful Women Do Differently. He’s the founder of TMBC, a management consulting company, and has been hailed as a visionary by corporations such as Toyota, Coca-Cola and Microsoft. He has appeared on Oprah and Larry King Live and been featured in major newspapers.

SUCCESS: What led you to bring your life-strengthening message to women in particular?

Marcus Buckingham: The leading data on women’s happiness over the past 40 years is compelling and disappointing. Women have gained greater power, broader influence, higher education and more money, but according to research by the National Bureau of Economic Research, women’s daily life satisfaction has gone downhill in the last 40 years. Men are actually slightly happier now that they were, probably due to the slight increase in prosperity we have had, while women’s daily satisfaction has dropped steadily, even given that greater prosperity. It’s true of women in the work force, those not working, those who have kids and those who don’t. As a researcher, I find this trend discouraging: half of our population is experiencing decreasing net happiness and satisfaction with life. When we look at what makes people engaged and fulfilled with their lives, everyone from economists to psychologists seems to agree that the feeling of self-efficacy, feeling valued and effective in your strength zone is critical. The happiest and most successful people are those who have figured out ways to play to the best of themselves in each part of their lives. They feel in the zone.

SUCCESS: What is causing this ongoing dissatisfaction and unhappiness in life?

Marcus Buckingham: There are two causes. One is excess of choice. Life’s tricky for women because they have more choices than men. Most women don’t get much help in knowing what choices will strengthen them, or how to have a strong internal compass so they don’t wonder about or regret the choices made. The second cause is that the advice women have been given is misleading. Women are told to strive for balance. It’s impossible to balance a morning let alone a day or a life. You’ll never balance perfectly the amount of hours spent on each particular aspect of your life, and it’s not satisfying when you try. If your goal in life is balance, you’ll forever be disappointing yourself.

SUCCESS: What do you mean when you say that the happiest and most successful women know how to catch and cradle?

Marcus Buckingham: The challenge of life is not to juggle, the challenge is to catch—to select a few clear strong moments from each aspect of your life and reach for those, draw them in to you. I call this “catch and cradle.” In contrast with manic juggling, there is a deliberate reaching for specific moments to cradle. When you cradle a baby, you concentrate on it, you feel its weight, and allow it to move you; you’re very responsive to it. Cradling is a very nurturing position; you’re not grasping it to you, there’s hopefulness to it. If you want to live a full life, a life that fulfills you, then you need to know in each part of your life which the specific moments that really renew your energy, and bring you joy, and go after them. You want to imbalance your life toward creating more of those specific moments. It’s a very different approach. It’s not “learn to say no” it’s “learn to say yes.” Learn who you are clearly enough to know which moments you need to say “yes” to, and understand that the moments won’t be the same for your sister or your next door neighbor or your coworker.

Productive Procrastination… What?
Tuesday October 13th 2009, 1:35 pm

Procrastination is a big deal for a lot of entrepreneurs, and we tend to view procrastination as a negative. But a colleague of mine has a completely different perspective on it, which I think very interesting and potentially helpful. Read on to learn more…

Kerul Kassel asks, “Could it actually be wise to procrastinate sometimes?” There are secrets to understanding when it can be productive to procrastinate, and strategies for switching on the inspiration and motivation to start and finish the important tasks and goals you’ve been putting off.

Procrastination isn’t what you think it is, and being a procrastinator isn’t necessarily a bad thing – sometimes it provides the space for you to connect with, engage, and optimize your potential. Productive procrastination also allows you to get things done with less struggle and resistance. Kerul has two books on procrastination, available at http://productiveprocrastinationbook.com/.

If you know that what is holding you back from the success you want is that you’re not doing what you know you need to do, that you’re putting things off, delaying things continually, you’re an eleventh hour person, or if you think procrastinator is your middle name, these books could be really helpful in getting your energy moving in a new direction.

090909: The Power of Meaningful Completions
Wednesday September 09th 2009, 11:49 am

Today is the Ninth day of the Ninth month in 2009, or 090909. It’s a big deal!

The Chinese use numerology to help understand the significance of particular events, and particularly honor endings as that is the stage for beginnings. This is especially exemplified by the number 9, because it is the last number in the natural series from 0 – 9, which means it is about completion. Over time, the number has become linked with fulfillment, endings, conclusions, completion and finishing up loose ends.

In the Western world, the field of numerology also attributes positive qualities to the number 9 – it means an evolutionary point at which you are poised to create something new as you finish what has been. The number nine is the ‘oldest’ in the series which means that, as in life, the elder innately understands how to care for others; the number nine is humanitarian in nature.

The shadow side of number nine is the awareness that there needs to be an end to many situations (relationships, careers, life choices, etc.) which may not be easy. There is potentially grief left in the wake of endings as you recognize what you are leaving behind as well as the emptiness that comes from making space through completions. It’s time to reconnect with and face the emotions that created what you need to let go of because you cannot move forward if you are holding on to the past. This is not about creating drama, or performing, but about authentic and complete release of what no longer serves you.

Nine can be about humanity and giving to others, but it can also be about cruelty as the emotional energy surrounding your endings pushes to the surface for awareness (and healing). Remember that nine is the most ‘advanced’ number, so you have the power of choice in the way you handle our transitions.

Also, the total of today’s number – 090909 – is 27. This is one of the most auspicious numbers for making change in Feng Shui, as many rituals last for 27 days. It is amazing how many changes you can make in just 27 days! One ritual for creating change in your life is to move or change one item in your home or office daily for 27 days in a row – by shifting your physical space, you are moving the energy in your life.

If you choose to honor what needs to end in your life and business today, you are creating the space for what is trying to come in; that is, you have cosmic timing on your side to help you complete the loose ends and get ready for the new.

Three Ways to Call in the Power of 090909:

1.     Take action on letting go of what needs to end in your life. If you have tolerations, or things you are putting up with, that is a place to start. That might mean the squeaky door in your house, the friendship that feels draining, the business routine that seems pointless and isn’t getting you the results you want. What do you need to end, or complete, that will allow something new to come in? By the by, endings don’t have to be harsh… they just need to be authentic, honest and clear.

2.     Call the infinite power of the Universe into your life through fire. Fire is a powerful symbol of transformation, and is used in many rituals to clear away energy that is no longer needed. You can light a candle and release in your mind’s eye what you don’t need any more into the candle to purify that energy and let it go from your energy space. You can also write out what you want to release (regrets, fears, haunting memories) and burn that piece of paper as you request the Universe to take that energy from you and cleanse it. Or you can just enjoy the peace and serenity of a candle for a few moments as you recall the best parts of whatever it is that you are releasing. In any case, invite the Universe to support you in your transition.

3.     Use the number 9 symbolically in your environment. You can get 9 tealight candles or a picture of 9 things or even draw the number 9 and hang it where you can see it comfortably from your desk. By placing the number 9 in your space, you are referencing and invoking the number of completion. It is especially powerful today… essentially, you are jump-starting your ability to tie up the loose ends in preparation for all the new that’s getting ready to enter your life.

One last tip: if you are out of alignment with any endings or completions that either need to happen or that need to be released, this is the most auspicious day to get that handled. What could be better than getting yourself harmonically aligned with your endings on the cosmically most auspicious day for completion?

Open Letter from Lynn.

Hi –

As strange as it feels to send this out, I am learning to receive from the Universe as a result of my recent health scare. Upon hearing about my experience, my client and friend put together a donation campaign to help with the mounting medical expenses facing me as an uninsured person.

Essentially, I woke up at 2:30 one Monday morning, long before the sun, and I felt my chest contracting, my left hand tingling and going numb and not feeling well. I decided to google my symptoms (naturally!), as I was sweating profusely and my jaw was tightening, and everything said I was experiencing some potential signs of a heart attack. Everything said “go to the ER NOW!!”. As I don’t have health insurance, I questioned that command, but the voice in my head kept saying to go to an ER.

So I googled the nearest hospital (since I rarely need healthcare and don’t have a provider), and got myself there to get a work-up. The staff was really sweet, but my symptoms were atypical and they weren’t sure what to do with me. They sent me home under the proviso that I would go see a cardiologist, which I did the following day when I could get in to his schedule. The test I need to get, evidently, costs $2,700. I said it was nice to meet him and wished him luck on the addition to the clinic. ;+)

I’ve been monitoring how I feel daily, and while some days are better than others, I started receiving the bills from these providers. Those aren’t the good days… ;+) I expected the costs to be pretty high (I used to pay insurance claims in another life), but it has literally tripled all my expectations. It is daunting, to say the least…

I shared this situation with a client and friend recently, who is following Joe Vitale’s Attract More Money book. She decided to put together a “Cause” on Facebook to let people know of my plight and to ask for support. It’s incredibly generous and creative… she based her idea on “benefit concerts” that are given to support uninsured musicians, and calculated that a $12 donation from enough people could help make these bills go away (which would help with stress levels and help me get the necessary aftercare).

At any rate, as odd as I feel in being this transparent with you about my problems, Thornton is telling me to honor her initiative and to let people know how they can help me if they so choose… and that’s the point of this email to you. I’ve never done this before, and it’s definitely out of my comfort zone. And I’m doing it anyway, as scary as it is… thank you for reading this far. :+)

The Fruits of Fulfillment Aren’t Grown Outside
Saturday August 08th 2009, 4:52 pm

People spend a lot of time seeking their life treasure by changing jobs, getting into new relationships, going on vacations, and other activities focused “out there”. There’s an expectation that once they finally find “it” – their next big ‘click’, more money, better toys – that they will finally feel fulfilled. So if they just keep going after achieving a new goal, a new prize, a new something, they believe they will experience the treasures of their life. The thought is that they, at last, will feel safe, happy and have no need to continue their incessant, driving search. And it couldn’t be further from the truth.

Somehow transformation, and therefore fulfillment, is presumed to be found somewhere other than within.  But fulfillment is a deep, natural craving that motivates us to go on a journey that many of us would just as soon avoid. Simply put, it’s simple but not easy.

In seeking fulfillment, we need to face demons that are invisible to the naked eye, risk what we already have without regret, and recognize that the physical rewards of the material world are merely an outer reflection of our inner experience and are therefore not sustainable as a source of deep, inner fulfillment. It’s a journey that is not measured by success or failure, but rather, by our own feeling sense of a seemingly elusive state of being that all people can have but few people actually experience.

Fulfillment is a certain freedom that is attained in the quest of it. You can’t have fulfillment without risking the security of the status quo. Because you don’t have it now, you feel compelled to get it, but you can’t get it until and unless you’re willing to go beyond what you already know. The biggest impediment to fulfillment is actually the very thing that defines it… a natural orientation around what feels good. But many people have no idea what that means as they live inside the boxes of “shoulds”, defensively avoiding social judgment as being unconventional and thereby possibly being rejected. In this manner, the path to fulfillment is outer-focused rather than inner-perceived.

The journey of fulfillment is one fraught with growth opportunities, challenges and profound learning in order to have a rich experience of oneself. Here are three things that you can do today to further your journey toward personal fulfillment.

  1. The Churn Factor: Life “churn” is an indicator that a lot of intense motion is occurring, but it’s when you are through it or the churn is stopped that there is peace. In other words, you may find that there is a lot of activity in your life when you are growing, but, if that activity includes drama, struggle, resistance, repetitive dysfunctional patterns and attachments, you are slowing your own fulfillment. Consider where your life is in churn and what needs to be addressed, handled and/or released to stop excessive and unnecessary churn in order to feel more fulfillment.

  2. Have Adventures. In the words of Hellen Keller, “Life is either a great adventure or it’s nothing.” An adventure is an experience that takes you beyond your known world, and it can be a physical one (like traipsing a new mountain trail) or intangible (connecting the dots of your emotional life to your current behaviors and outcomes). In either case, adventures infuse a sense of wonder, excitement and push you to new levels of resilience and expanded perception about what’s happening to engage a new sense of fulfillment in your life.
  3. Say It. If you’ve been holding something back, not having a conversation that needs to be had, living in toleration around a relationship or situation, it’s time to get that out and communicated. Up until this point, that situation or relationship has had more power than you, and you’ve been in a reactive state, living with what showed up vs. responsibly creating your best life. It may not be pretty, it may not be simple, and you may not know what is going to happen, but if it allows you to be more of who you are, it’s what’s needed for you to experience a greater sense of fulfillment in your life. In the words of an anonymous bard, “it’s better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.”

Fulfillment is a sweetness that can only be savored from the inside as expanded perception and freedom from external attachments. Isn’t it time for you to start savoring the fruits of your fulfillment?
